I have an old quilt top to share with you today. This Double Wedding Ring was machine pieced by my great grandmother Eva, sometime before 1940.
I see prints I would identify as being from the last decade of the 1800's and a few pieces that look like drapery fabric. It's in good shape, having never been quilted or used. There is at least one small age spot but that's all I've found so far.
I've taken a few deail photos so you can see the variety of fabrics she used. (I have no idea whether clicking on the photos will take you to a larger image or not. I haven't figured out that bit of magic yet.)
I'm so relieved I didn't pack this quilt top with the mothballs that the other family linens are infused with! By the way, if anyone has any ideas for eliminating mothball fumes from textiles please let me know. I'm going to take advantage of the sunshine today and lay them out on a sheet in the yard to see if that will help.
Hi Sue, airing should help quite abit, but I have no clue if it will remove all of the mothball smell or not.

ReplyDeleteAh the mothball dilemna I know all too well but don't have an answer for. I took one of my old quilts apart and got rid of the batting and that eliminated the problem for that one. The batting wasn't cotton so I think the mothball smell was in it to stay. If you hear a solution, please pass it on to me. I love the DWR. I want to make one someday. BTW the deed is done regarding the meme. Check it out at my place if you haven't already. I consumed a lot of calories for you! *hehe*.. and loved every minute of it.
ReplyDeleteI have one quilt from my grandmother. It's in pretty bad shape and can't be used. I don't even think it would look nice hung somewhere. Sometimes I think about cutting it up to make a picture of some sort for each of my siblings but they have the idea it is worth a lot of money which it isn't but they don't understand is that it needs to be in good condition. I like having a piece of my grandmother with me anyhow.
