An Offer of Comfort and Distraction

At the tail end of a previous post I showed some of the 15.5" nine patch blocks that I was planning to turn into a Disappearing 9 Patch quilt top. This was an effort to use up more of my older prints and larger scrap pieces.

I ended up making 14 of these large blocks. Then I cut them down the middle, top to bottom and side to side, and rearranged the quarters to create this flimsy:

Most of the prints I used in the 9Patch blocks feature whimsical images, and I was able to cut pairs for a lot of the blocks. That made it feel appropriate for an I Spy quilt for a child. I made enough blocks to create a top that will finish at 51" wide by 58" long. I believe I'm going to let the binding be the final border, so to speak.

When I started this project I don't think I had yet learned about Wrap Ukraine With Quilts, an effort to provide refugees from the conflict in Ukraine with something warm and comforting. Since then I've decided that will be the destination for this particular quilt.

There are not exact matches for every print in the flimsy. There are four dinosaurs, for example, but none of them are twins. And I have a patch of adult cats and another featuring kittens.

Hopefully this will give a child something happier to think about than the terror and losses they've had to endure. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦

  1. A quilt of their own, to have and to hold close, a treasure filled with love. The lime green is a lovely splash of colour there.

  2. Love the background fabric and the cheerful colors mixed with that lovely green. (Quiltdivajulie)

  3. I love this quilt. The feature prints look as though they're floating in the air above the background, and the green squares are 'shadows'. Such a clever, creative way to use those fabrics, and such a good cause.
